Unpacking the Emotional Attachment Behind Addiction

💔 It isn’t so much about the THING someone is addicted to (alcohol, drugs, …) as it is about the RELATIONSHIP or the DYNAMIC with that thing.

💊 I stopped abusing ‘party’ drugs (ecstasy, cocaine) in 2015, but then alcohol became a problem. I stopped drinking in 2017, but then unhealthy relationships became a problem.

⚡️It wasn’t about the drugs. Or the alcohol. Or even the guys. It was ME. I was the common denominator. It was my relationship with those things, my dynamic with those things. 😣

💝 I’m blessed that my parents are (still) married. I didn’t experience neglect or abuse as a child. I didn’t go without. (Saying this to say, addiction doesn’t discriminate.)

Questions I asked myself,
💥 “what is going on with me??”
💥 “what feelings am I numbing?”
💥 “is it something within me that’s bothering me or is it something outside of me? Where am I feeling this?”

🔍 We can’t see our own blind spots. I started working with therapists, coaches, surrounding myself with people who were in places in their lives that I knew I wanted to be in myself.

💫 I gained insight, self awareness, and started understanding why I did the things I did.

I’m not here to tell anyone what to do. I’m genuinely inquisitive and, after years of personal and professional experience with mental health and substance abuse, ask quintessential questions to support in gaining your own clarity within yourself ❤️‍🩹
