Questions to Ask if Choosing a Substance Abuse Treatment Center
January 22, 2019
Deciding To Make a Change and Treatment Options
January 22, 2019

In my last blog topic, I discussed questions to ask when choosing a substance abuse treatment center. But how do you know if you even need treatment? It’s tricky with addiction because it can be difficult to objectively look at the situation. If you are concerned about yours or a loved one’s drug use, below are common signs to be aware of. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), if you or a loved one has two or more of these signs or symptoms, you should consider looking into substance abuse treatment centers:

  • Consuming more than intended or taking the drug for a longer period of time than intended.

  • Failed attempts to cut back or quit substance use.

  • Placing a great emphasis on finding the drug, using the drug, and recovering from its negative effects.

  • Intense cravings for the abused substance.

  • Inability to fulfill responsibilities at school, work, or home.

  • Ongoing substance use despite negative social or interpersonal consequences.

  • Abandoning hobbies and recreational activities for drug use.

  • Persistent substance use in dangerous and harmful situations (for example, driving a car)

  • Awareness of a physical or a mental condition brought on or worsened by drug use, yet choosing to use the drug anyway.

  • Tolerance – requiring more of the substance to feel the same effect and experiencing less of the desirable effects when taking the same amount.

  • Withdrawal: experiencing withdrawal symptoms characteristic of that particular drug and taking the drug to avoid or alleviate withdrawal symptoms.

As with any sort of medical advice, it is recommended to seek professional help to further assess and evaluate you or your loved one.
